SUMPUR KUDUS, Indonesia — A former elementary school teacher broke down in tears on a muddy forest floor in West Sumatra late last year after finding a flower species that had eluded scientists for more than a decade.
Septian “Deki” Andriki, a self-taught plant hunter, had spent 13 years searching for Rafflesia hasseltii, a parasitic, leafless bloom that can grow larger than a dinner plate and emits a rotting-flesh odor to attract pollinators. On the night of Nov. 19, 2025, following a tip from a local resident, Andriki led a team of researchers into the tiger-inhabited rainforest of Sijunjung Regency. After a nearly day-long trek, they found a single bud unfurling its blood-red, white-speckled petals.
“After 13 years, a 23-hour journey, risking tiger attacks, nearly dead phone batteries, I couldn’t talk,” Andriki later said. “I just cried.”
The emotional moment — captured on video and shared globally — masked a serious scientific milestone. Rafflesia hasseltii is one of about 42 recognized species in the Rafflesia genus, bizarre chlorophyll-less parasites found only in rainforests of Sumatra, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Brunei. The plants live invisibly inside host vines for years, blooming only briefly with flowers that can span nearly a meter across.
More Than a Viral Moment
The rediscovery was part of a multinational research effort backed by the University of Oxford and involving scientists from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Chris Thorogood of Oxford Botanic Garden, who accompanied Andriki, said watching the outpouring made him feel like “the luckiest guy alive.”
The team has been collecting DNA from more than a dozen Rafflesia variants across Indonesia to map the genus’ evolutionary relationships. Researchers hope genetics will explain why the plant blooms so rarely and unpredictably — knowledge that could aid conservation.
A Quiet Machine of Discovery
The Sumatran find is only the most photogenic example of a vast, unglamorous enterprise: finding, describing, and naming new plant species before they vanish.
At the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, scientists discover and formally describe roughly 200 new species annually — about one in every 10 new plants named worldwide. In 2025, the Garden highlighted standout finds including a Costa Rican moonlight cactus whose identification required a 20-year wait for it to flower, and a new sapodilla relative from Madagascar known from only two sites threatened by charcoal production.
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History reported nine new species, three new genera, and one new subgenus in 2025. Botanists described a new subgenus of Vitis — the grape genus — based on two threatened wild species from Mexico with red flowers and dotted stems, only the third such subgenus recognized in nearly a century.
Citizen Science and Drones
Not all discoveries required deep wilderness. In Texas’ Big Bend National Park, volunteer botanist Deb Manley spotted small fuzzy plants with maroon flowers while walking a remote desert stretch. She uploaded photos to the citizen-science platform iNaturalist, leading to the identification of an entirely new genus nicknamed the “wooly devil” — the first new plant genus documented in a U.S. national park since 1976.
In Hawaii, researchers used a drone fitted with a robotic collecting arm to reach an inaccessible cliff on Kauai. The device returned samples of a previously unknown carnation-family plant, Schiedea waiahuluensis, believed to be the first new plant species ever discovered by drone.
Racing the Clock
Many plants botanists are finding for the first time are already among the rarest organisms on Earth — restricted to a single mountain range, dune, or cliff face — and often under threat from logging or habitat loss.
Naming a species is not merely academic. As botanists argue, it is the necessary first step before any legal protection or conservation plan can exist. Only after Rafflesia hasseltii was confirmed alive could researchers begin arguing for stronger protections in a forest where most known populations sit outside any protected boundary.
Scientists estimate thousands of plant species remain undescribed, many declining toward extinction unnoticed. Each year’s tally of new species is not just an inventory of nature’s surprises — it is a race against time, run one flowering cactus, one drone flight, one tear-streaked jungle trek at a time.
